MERSEY MARATHON PROPOSAL SUBMITTED!!

HOPEFUL FOR A GOOD OFFICIAL REACTION
After the encouraging reaction from runners to the idea of a Mersey Marathon, a proposal document regarding the possibility of a marathon event in 2010 has been put forward to Liverpool City Council and Wirral Council for their consideration.
The draft proposal would see a Mersey Marathon start in Birkenhead Park and utilise a ten mile route through New Brighton and back down the Egremont promenade towards Birkenhead (using elements of the Tunnel 10K course). Moving through Hamilton Square the route would then pass through the Queensway (Birkenhead) Tunnel to emerge at the bottom of William Brown Street. Runners would then take in Dale Street, Water Street, turning left onto Goree to pick up the existing Half marathon course.
The finish would be in the shadow of the Liverpool Arena!
IT MUST BE STRESSED THAT THE IDEA IS ONLY AT THE PLANNING STAGE AND FORMAL AGREEMENT WOULD BE REQUIRED FROM BOTH COUNCIL AND TUNNEL AUTHORITIES FOR THE IDEA TO BE DEVELOPED FURTHER.

The proposed date for the event would be Sunday, 24th October 2010.
Given recent comment from key figures with the city and regional authorities endorsing the positive impact events like a marathon could have on the local economy it will be interesting to see what the official reaction is to the new Mersey Marathon plan.
Watch this space for any developments.
