2,802 Finishers Cross The Mersey And Not A Ferry In Sight.
The 2011 Mersey Tunnel 10K has proved to be the biggest so far with an amazing 3,300 entries – around 700 up on last year – and a record number 2,802 crossing the finish line in New Brighton.
It was an amazing sight in Pall Mall just before 9.30am on 12th June with the massed ranks of runners filling the street between Leeds Street and Tithebarn Street. They had gathered for the 6th Mersey Tunnel 10K since the event made a welcome return to the local sporting calendar back in 2006.
Previous to that the comparatively small number of 693 finishers took part in the last of the original series of Mersey Tunnel races in 2002. So, fast forward to 2011 and the 400% increase in participation supports the positive view show by John Gillard (now retired) at The Mersey Tunnels who thought it was time to bring the event back in 2005.
A massive vote of thanks must go to the Mersey Tunnels for allowing the use of the Kingsway Tunnel and Kevin Haggar in particular (Tunnels Police) who has helped significantly over the last six years to ensure the race can go ahead.
With a huge field and perfect weather conditions the runners set off bang on 9.30am to take on the challenge of the 1 mile incline on the way out of the Tunnel. To the chants of Oggi Oggi Oggi Oi Oi Oi Oi they all took it in their stride as they emerged on the Wirral side of the Mersey – to be greeted with the first hint of… rain! Not a problem for the runners who backed by a tail wind along the 2 mile final stretch along the promenade made good time with many posting PBs.
The only downside to the day was the increasing rainfall which meant most people left prematurely to escape the miserable weather – but what else would you expect in JUNE!
Well done to everyone that took part and we hope to see you back in even bigger numbers next year with perhaps improved weather conditions!
