100,000 bottles of water. 8,000 bananas. Oldest Male Gordan Brown 78 yrs old. Oldest Female Jill Thompson 71 yrs old. Patrick Dermul came from Belgium and was number 50 as it was his 50th Marathon. Kymberly Nicholson came from Canada to run and was getting married on the Monday after the race, she ran in a wedding dress.

The Long & Winding Road Race

RunLiverpool Marathon acknowledged as a resounding success!
Tens of thousands of runners and spectators enjoy a brilliant day on 09.10.11.

After nearly 20 years away the all new RunLiverpool Marathon attracted much praise after a successful staging on 9th October. Despite a delayed start caused by traffic related issues along the course runners were delighted – once they had completed the 26.2 mile course – with many acknowledging the ‘challenging’ course and spectacular support.

Just over 5,200 runners were set off from Birkenhead Park by LFC star Jamie Carragher to take part in the Long And Winding Road Race which was won by Liverpool Harrier John McCole in a time of 2 hours and 34 minutes. The ladies race was won by Alison Sedman from belle Vue harriers in a time of 3 hours and 8 minutes.

Many amongst the 5,000 contingent were running for charity and most enjoyed the variety along the course, if not the incline out of the Queensway Tunnel and challenging ascent of Parliament Street!

Everyone was treated to the best view of the Liverpool skyline as they ran along the promenade between New Brighton and Wallasey – but it seems the high point of the race was as runners exited the Mersey Tunnel just after half way to the rhythmic pounding of drums from the Batala Band. Coupled with the cheers from the massed ranks of spectators many found this section truly emotional.

The post race comment was massively in favour of the event with many calls for confirmation as to when entries would be open for 2012.

The race date for next year is set for Sunday, 14th October.
